INSTRUCTOR PREREQUISITES

Certification Requirements (All Levels) Instructor Candidates:
  • Have completed the prerequisites;
  • Are in possession of the ISPA Logbook with all the registration seals, and understand the use of the logbook for an instructor teaching and certifying students;
  • Are aware of the requirements for registering certified students;
  • Can demonstrate proper methods of instruction for both shore-based and practical courses;
  • Can demonstrate the knowledge and skills for the ISPA standards, up to and including the levels they are certified to teach, by completing and passing the applicable written sail or power instructor examinations;
  • Have signed the instructor code of ethics;
  • Have provided the registration fee and annual fees;
  • Have been evaluated and passed by a current Instructor Evaluator
 
Application Prerequisites
  • The candidate must have completed the latest Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Navigation workbooks and chart work, and be in possession of the latest logbook and have their certificates for the courses.
  • The candidate can be a cross over from another organization with similar standards and competencies (US Sail, RYA, IYT, Sail Canada etc)


Basic Sailing Instructor:
Certification: Instruct and certify Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Navigator shore-based and he-water-courses courses.  

An Advanced Instructor for Coastal Skipper
Certification:  Instruct and certify Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation, Coastal Skipper shore-based and on the water courses.
 Advanced Instructor for YachtMaster and above
  • Instruct and certify Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster and/or Yachtmaster Ocean shore-based and on the-water-courses. 
  • You will have the knowledge for Advanced Navigation. 
  • You will have some coaching or teaching experience logged in your logbook within the past year.
